President's Blog - June 2020
Hello everyone and welcome to Filey Lions Club website.
As my wife Kairen and I take up our year of office, it seems very strange in these unprecedented times that many of our usual annual events will not be going ahead, due to the Coronavirus pandemic which has swept the country and indeed the world.
Our usual summer events, teddy bear raffles on the coble landing, the ever popular ball race, the donkey derby and 10k beach race have all had to be withdrawn for this year. It is also unlikely that our annual bonfire and firework display, a community event, will go ahead. It seems impossible that we could invite 3000 people into a small area to enjoy that event.
We continue to support the community in the best ways we safely can, and our initiative to provide our minibus and drivers to shop and collect prescriptions for the housebound residents has been something we as a club are immensely proud of, and which has been very well received and supported by the community of Filey. As more and more residents are allowed out to the shops we are winding down the service at the end of July, but it will remain as a major achievement for the club members who were able to assist with it, notably those who were able to drive the minibus.
Looking further ahead, great thought will be needed as to whether we are able to carry on with our santa sleigh collections and our very popular over 85’s Christmas lunch. Obviously this vulnerable age group poses a big question mark over that event.
In the meantime, and until we can do otherwise, we are making use of the internet where we can for online meetings on Zoom, though not all members are wishing to be involved in those. We look forward to a time when we can return to some normality.
Keep safe everyone, and remember we can be contacted through our website or through social media.
Yours in Lionism
Lion John Sellers.
